Red Fox Squirrel Nymph How-To

Since flooding has totally killed my fishing and guiding for a little while now I have been at the vise getting ready for when I am finally able to hit the river(s) again.

Here is Dave Whitlock’s Red Fox Squirrel Nymph–at least my version of it.

Materials:

2x long Nymph hook

Gold Bead (or not, either way)

“Crawdad red” squirrel zonker strip

Gold Tensil

Red Fox Squirrel nymph dubbing

Hare’s Ear Dubbing

Patridge

Put bead on hook, and dress the hook shank.

Tear off a bit of fur off of the squirrel Zonker strip and attach as tail.

Attach gold tensil at the bend of the hook.

Dub the lower body with “Red Fox Squirrel” dubbing,

Wrap tensil over the dubbing leaving small spaces and tie down in front of the dubbing.

Dub the Hare’s Ear dubbing a little thicker than the RFSN dubbing(to help the partidge hackles hold farther away from the body while in the water and to help with the overall profile)

After stripping the Patridge hackle (strip all of the hackles off of the right side of the feather as the top of the feather is facing you) attach the top of the hackle by the tip between the bead and the Hare’s Ear dubbing.

Wrap 2 turns of the hackle directly behind the bead.  Whip Finish.
