T Minus 2 Days….

Posted in fly fishing on February 15, 2009 by Brian Wise

until the end.  Well actually not really the end but it will be the end of the page you are reading now.  You see, Congress has NO SAY when the transition to the new and probably not really improved Fly Fishing the Ozarks will take place.  February 17th will be the last day this page is updated.

I will not run this into the ground anymore….the new link? www.flyfishingtheozarks.com

In The Buff.

Posted in fly fishing on February 15, 2009 by Brian Wise

If you have spent any time at Fly Fishing the Ozarks I’m sure you have come across a photo of somone wearing a cool looking “facemask” well, those facemasks are called BUFFs (as seen by the Fly Fishing the Ozarks Gangstas.)  I get a lot of questions about these things so I thought I would give a little more details.

From Buff’s Site:

Buff® is the brand of an innovative, useful, comfortable, fun, multi-functional garment that will keep off the sun, wind or cold.. The brand’s success consists of having created a product that didn’t exist before 1992, which meets a significant need among sportspeople and outdoor activity practitioners who are seeking functionality, quality and design.

Original because it was and continues to be the first worldwide brand to create the first seamless, multi-purpose, tubular headgear.

Functional because it can be worn in loads of different ways: as a scarf, cap, headscarf, facemask, balaclava, headband, wristband… and as many other ways as you can think up. A versatile article that can be worn more than twelve different ways, used to practice any sport including cycling, skiing, playing tennis, running, going by motorbike, even as a daily clothing accessory.

Starting in 2008 BUFF introduced a line of Angler BUFFS that are seriously cool, UV Blocking, sweat wicking, neck warming, turbo awesomeness!  They even upped the ante late 2008 by sponsoring the Save Wild Steelhead Festival…giving back to a sport that they quite literally just jumped into not long before.  In 2008 they dropped some really cool prints that mostly targeted saltwater fisherman–tarpon, dorado, and bone fish.

January 2009 brought a completely different line of BUFFS targeting the cold and warm water fisheries with Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, and Striper prints.  ON TOP OF THAT they are making a Cyclone Buff out of the striper and largmouth prints.  The Cyclone Buffs are pretty much half regular BUFF and half Gore-Tex Windstopper…for those cold days.  And, can I say it again….ON TOP OF THAT, they decide to make a line of Insect Shield Buffs that keep the bugs away.  All of the new Buffs have Polygiene odor control technology that keeps the stink away.

I couldn’t be more excited about the Striper-style Cyclone Buffs…..and have ordered one already–with Cyclone Buff on the way this late in the winter, I wish the cold weather could last a little longer!

To check out the full line of Angler Buffs click here also check out the rest of the adult, kids, and baby Buffs as well.  You can even buy the Buff worn by those crazy reality television fame-chasing Survivor contestants!

February Fly of the Month….

Posted in fly fishing on February 12, 2009 by Brian Wise

February means changes to Fly Fishing the Ozarks Blog so I thought we would start a new Fly of the Month series.  Our last series was of course the super cool big fish catching Galloup Series of Streamers and it went over very well.

This series is going to blend the new with the old (new blog, old flies) BUT we are going to be doing a fully photographed, step-by-step (and probably video as well) How-to of every fly of the month in this series.  Truth be told it may look like we are copping out of finding the new pattern for every month…but it is exactly the opposite.  Those patterns that you have in your box, those old tried and true patterns—-will still catch fish.  To be honest, they are probably going to be more consistent than most of these new patterns as well.  So for the next few months don’t expect crazy cool looking patterns but you can expect to see full on step-by-step, how-to instructions, with some videos thrown in as well.

What nymphs have caught more fish than any other nymphs??

February’s fly of the month should be at least one of the top 2 flies that popped into your head with the above question being randomly thrown at you without cause or reason.

The Bead-Head Hares Ear

Here is a not-so-instructional video of me tying a horrible Hares Ear.  I tie mine a little different than the original pattern.  For instance the photo above shows a very thick tail that, to me, makes the flys profile look like the body extends way back beyond the taper of the body.  I tie my tails with Squirrel tail so it looks like there is a tail of some kind an not an extended body.

Again, please change your bookmarks to the new  www.flyfishingtheozarks.com February 17 is the last time the blog you are reading now will be updated with any more content….and we are not like the pansy Congress and giving 4 more months to figure crap out.

Fishadelic Foto Friday!

Posted in fly fishing on February 6, 2009 by Brian Wise

Our very own Fishadelic Foto Friday Foto Funkidelicing Queen will now have her turn in the Limelight with the tables turned.  The guy that sent me the photo was giving her crap about the bright colors and everything she is wearing which, to be honest, was the first thing I noticed too.   But if you look at the bright colors in a different way….she is holding a fish.  I’ll be the first to admit that I have been known to go against the grain of conventional thinking and I personally applaud the Funkidelicing Queen for making more than just a fashion statement on-stream…but making a statement for people who CAN catch fish while wearing bright, crazy colors while fishing, I think the Queens Empire just expanded.

Plus the Caddis colored earrings are just plain well played!

:)

Can Gore-Tex be Tye Died?

Fear No Limb!

Posted in fly fishing on January 30, 2009 by Brian Wise

As I’m sure you know there was a little bit of an ice storm here in the mid-west.  One or two limbs fell and I had my boat parked in one of the worst spots I could have parked it at my place….but the Clack stands tall after taking a beating.  “Fear No Rock” meets “Fear No Limb!”

Digital T.V. Transition and Fly Fishing the Ozarks??

Posted in fly fishing on January 23, 2009 by Brian Wise

With all the happenings at Fly Fishing the Ozarks in the last couple of weeks we have settled on a festive day to completely kill the wordpress site you are reading now and have the transition to the new site (www.flyfishingtheozarks.com/blog ) complete….that day will be February 17, 2009.  You may have heard that the FCC decided to make the transition from analog television to digital television the same day as we picked for a transition—we have nothing but love for the FCC for picking the same day we did….as a matter of fact it is understandable.

The site is live now, by all means check it out and let us know what we can do better or what you would like to see.

For those who have subscribed there is a new subscription sign up  and it only takes a couple of seconds.  You can find this link in about the same spot you found it originally, between a couple of “gangstas” that I’m sure you will see grace the pages of Fly Fishing the Ozarks in the near future.
